Why are Christian Women reading 50 Shades of Grey?

As of today, 50 Shades of Grey is still the #1 best-selling book on the NY Times Best Sellers list. I was conflicted for about a month on whether I should read it and God confirmed what I should do, so let me explain.

I heard about the book when I watched The View and some other talk shows. I thought nothing much about it before my neighbor placed the contents of this book on a pedestal. She said, '"It will rekindle the passion in your sex life, it did for me." For about 24 hours, I kept thinking about what she said over and over "Rekindle the passion….Rekindle the passion in your sex life." I then started to think, “Is the absence of my passionate sex life that evident to others?” I thought, “If it is that apparent to others then it must be a problem for my husband of 5 years.” This led me to follow what millions of women are doing and read, "50 Shades ofGrey."

Well, to be honest instead of purchasing the book, I first downloaded the first 2 chapters from Amazon. Half way through the first chapter I heard God say to me, "you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood and a holy nation.....so why are you reading this book? You can ask me about anything in your life and I will provide an answer." At that point, I stopped reading and asked for God's forgiveness. While seeking forgiveness for trying to find worldly ways to somewhat improve a sex life that was interrupted about 2 years ago by a baby boy, I remembered Psalms 139 4-7 KJV.

4 For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.
5 You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it. 7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?

These verses are a reminder that God is present and He wants us to seek His will for our lives, even if it means asking him about satisfying our spouse sexually. God made sex so why are we afraid to ask him for assistance between the sheets?

Below are a few more scriptures that helped me. These were all taken from The Message Bible.

1 Cor. 6:19-Or didn't you realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit? Don't you see that you can't live however you please, squandering what God paid such a high price for? The physical part of you is not some piece of property belonging to the spiritual part of you.

1 Pet. 2:9-But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God's instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you.

I also saw some other scriptures on momof3darlings.wordpress.com blog:

1 Corinthians 6:18
Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

1 Thessalonians 4:3-5
For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;

Matthew 5:28
But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman [OR MAN] with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

In conclusion, 50 Shades of Grey helped me re-examine my walk with God and I was reminded that as Christians our convictions are different. Seek God today and he will show you His truth! Let us keep the conversation going on time-warp wife.blogspot.

  1. I too downloaded the sample. It was a really crappy book from what I read in the first two chapters. Luckily it didn't get into the dirty stuff, because at that point I didn't know it was BDSM, and I am pretty sure I would have been scared for life if I had read the whole thing...
